The export-diversifying impact of and U.S. foreign direct investments in indian manufacturing sector

The paper highlights the export-diversifying impact of FDI in a developing country. FDI from a particular source may lead to export diversification of developing countries if it positively affects the export-intensity of the non-traditional export sector. Indirectly, FDI may encourage export diversification by spillover effects on the exportintensity of domestic firms in the non-traditional export sector. The empirical results forthe Indian economy in the post liberalization period show that FDI from U.S. has led to diversification of India's exports both directly as well as indirectly. However, Japanese FDI has had no significant impact on India's exportsFDI and Exports, Indian Exports, Export-Diversification, Japanese FDI, U.S. FDI

Abstract: The paper empirically estimates the impact of trade on labour productivity and wage inequality between skilled (white collar) and unskilled (blue collar) labour in Indian manufacturing. Analysis is undertaken using dynamic panel data estimations (GMM) for 58 manufacturing industries for the period 1998-99 to 2004-05. The results show that export intensity of industries has positively impacted productivity of unskilled labour while import competition has led to higher productivity of both skilled and unskilled labour. However, trade has led to increase in wage inequalities between skilled and unskilled labour implying that it has increased the wages of skilled labour more than the unskilled labour.Trade and Wage Inequality; labour productivity; wage inequality between skilled and unskilled labour; Wage Inequality; Indian manufacturing and labour productivity; Indian manufacturing and wage inequality; Labour productivity of unskilled labour

Impact of trade in services on gender employment in India

Trade in services has played a pivotal role in boosting economic growth of India. However, very few studies exist that trace its gender differential impacts. This study makes a pioneering attempt to estimate the impact of exports of services on gender employment in 46 sectors, which include 15 services sectors. Social Accounting Matrix has been used to generate gender employment multipliers and identify sectors where higher exports of services may lead to greater gender employment equality. Further, a primary survey is undertaken to capture the gender differential impact of trade in Information and Technology Enabled Services. Policy implications to gender sensitise trade policy are derived from the results.Gender and trade in services, Gender employment, SAM, Gender impact of trade in ITES; Gender and trade in services in India

The paper analyzes the effect of ownership on efficiency of engineering firms in India in the 1990s, a decade of major economic reforms. Technical efficiency of firms, estimated with help of a stochastic frontier production function, is considered for the analysis. A comparison of technical efficiency is made among three groups of firms in Indian engineering: (1) firms with foreign ownership, (2) domestically owned private sector firms, and (3) public sector firms. The results clearly indicate that foreign firms in Indian engineering industry have higher technical efficiency than domestically owned firms. No significant difference in technical efficiency is found between private sector and public sector firms among the domestically owned firms. There are indications of a process of efficiency convergence - the domestically owned firms tending to catch up with foreign owned firms in terms of technical efficiency. The results show a positive relationship between international trade orien

Impact of Trade Liberalization on Foreign Direct Investment in Indian Industries

The paper undertakes analyses at three levels and the results arrived at different levels indicate that trade liberalization has had a favourable effect on FDI flows in India. It is also found that the regions having greater extent of international trade are able to attract greater amount of FDI. Some evidence is found that point to differential effects of trade associated with international vertical integration and intra-industry trade. Though liberalization has led to a substantial increase in intra-industry trade, much of the intra-industry being horizontal in nature in India is not found to have a strong favourable effect on FDI.Trade Liberalization, Foreign Direct Investmetn, India, Indian Industries
